“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:10). When I examine my heart, even when giving credit and exalting others with my mouth, many times in my mind I am keeping a count of how much I did versus how much they did. This is a wrong view. Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” At every turn we are bombarded with the idea that we must be the best and the first at everything, that we deserve the first and the best of everything. After all, we work hard so why not, right? The problem with this line of thinking for the believer is that this world as we know it is not our home. It is only temporary. In Matthew 24:35 Jesus says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” So, as believers we must be concerned with every word that comes from the mouth of God. Therefore, we must practice humility and value others above ourselves. We must stop clamoring to be first. We must stop vying for the best of the best. “Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last” (Luke 13:30).
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that this world is not our home. Thank You that we get to spend eternity with You. Please help us to practice humility and to honor others above ourselves in love. We love You. We trust You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
