Be Humble

Have you ever been in a situation where the tension was so thick you could cut it? I have. Did you humble yourself and make the first move to ease the tension? I didn’t. Were you patient with those around you? I wasn’t. Did you bear with them in love? I didn’t.

Have you ever been in a situation where the tension was so thick you could cut it?  (Not a violent situation.  Perhaps an issue at work or a family disagreement).  I have.  Did you humble yourself and make the first move to ease the tension?  I didn’t.  Were you patient with those around you?  I wasn’t.  Did you bear with them in love?  I didn’t.  Ephesians 4:2 says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”  What is it about humbling ourselves that stops us in our tracks?  Being humble means being generous, showing love, and honoring others above ourselves.  It also means giving others recognition and glory above ourselves.  That’s difficult for many of us to do because it goes against this self-indulgent world we have to live in, but it is what Jesus tells us to do.  “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).  Therefore, we must change our way of thinking.  We must remember that, while we live in this world, we are not of this world.  We are set apart and the way we treat others matters to God.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that we are set apart to spend eternity with You.  Please help us to always keep You first and to honor others above ourselves.  We love You.  We trust You.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
