Isn’t it amazing that God created us all uniquely with our own characteristics and quirks that make us who we are? While we may share some of the same ideas and values, there is no one else on the planet exactly like us. (Just thinking about that leaves me in awe of God’s sovereignty.) Unfortunately, our differences are sometimes a barrier to open, honest communication among believers. As Christ followers, we must cling to this truth, There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28). We must let go of this notion that one of us is better than another and accept the truth that we will never meet another person who was not made in God’s image. In Romans 12:3 Paul warns us, For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.
If we keep trying to ‘measure up’ based on our own efforts, we will keep feeling the need to exalt ourselves, which makes us feel the need to put others down (even if unintentionally), and the cycle will continue. We must strive daily to look at ourselves through the lens of God’s word. Paul continues in Romans 12:4-5 saying, For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. There is a place and a responsibility for every believer in the body of Christ.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that we ALL have a place and a responsibility as believers in You. Please give all who call You Lord a mind and heart to know that we will never meet a person who is not made in Your image. Give us hearts and minds to love and serve as You do. We love You. We trust You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
